The YWCA WE Shelter at Summit House has closed for the 2012-2013 season.  We greatly appreciate every volunteer who worked at the shelter, provided food or breakfast bags, donated supplies, and/or supported the shelter in any other way!  We served 69 women between December 1, 2012 and March 31, 2013.  Many of the participants were able to find housing and/or jobs during the time they stayed at the shelter.

2012-2013 Information

FBC partnered with Greensboro Urban Ministry, the YWCA, and several other congregations to sponsor a Winter Emergency Shelter for homeless women in our community. This was our fourth year to support this ministry. The YWCA WE Shelter at Summit House served up to 25 women each night and was located off Yanceyville Street north of Cornwallis. The shelter was open from 6:00 pm until 7:00 am each night. Secure parking was available beside the building.

FBC provided volunteers and food for the residents on Sunday, Tuesday, and Friday evenings. There are many ways to support the ministry including:

  • Praying for women, the staff and the volunteers
  • Volunteering to be a Check-in/Greeter, be a Dinner host, provide Breakfast bags, or serve as an Overnight Assistant
  • Leading a special activity
  • Donating supplies and other financial support

Training is available for volunteers:  Training Audio - click to listen . . .

Donations:

Periodically the Shelter is in need of donations such as personal hygiene supplies, laundry supplies, etc. If you would like to be placed on an e-mail list to receive a notice when supply donations are needed, please email shelter@fbcgso.org.

Interested in volunteering?

Training is available!  These sessions will help you  be prepared to serve in the shelter.  On-site volunteers are encouraged to attend one of the training sessions listed to the left before working in the shelter.  Additional sessions will be offered during the year.

Got an idea that the women would enjoy and you would like to lead (such a movie night, singing, etc.)?  Contact Catherine Little at 856-0623 or shelter@fbcgso.org to coordinate how you can be involved in the Shelter.
