| | Records dating back to 1850 indicate that five faithful Baptists held together a little unorganized group, under several ministries, until May 13, 1859, when the Greensboro Baptist Church was constituted under the leadership of Dr. John Mitchell. Our Church Covenant is verbatim the Covenant that those faithful pioneers of our faith prayerfully and thoughtfully formulated.
The original band, from which has grown our present First Baptist Church, first worshiped in the old County Court House that stood in the middle of Jefferson Square. Next, the South Elm Street building, purchased from the Methodists in 1851, was the meeting place until it was condemned. The new South Elm Street building was completed about 1871. On the morning of July 6, 1885 it was destroyed by fire and Bogarts Hall was the Baptist house of worship until the new structure on Washington Street was dedicated in May 1887. In 1906 the building on the corner of West Market and Eugene Streets were erected.
First Baptist Church entered its present building on November 30, 1952. The activities building and the childrens wing were added in 1963.
